SUPER
Also: superimpose · title card · TITLE
SUPER, short for superimpose, means words appear on top of the picture. Writers use it for a place or date ("SUPER: PARIS, 1944"), a character's name, or a translation of foreign dialogue.
Anything the audience reads on screen over the image is a super. Write SUPER: followed by the exact words in quotes, so it is clear what should appear.
If the words appear on a plain black screen instead of over a picture, many writers call it a TITLE or TITLE CARD instead.
EXT. HARBOR - DAWN Fishing boats rock in the fog. SUPER: "Marseille. Ten years earlier."
