Want and need
Also: want vs need · goal · character arc
A character's want is the goal they chase on the surface, like winning the race or getting the job. Their need is the deeper thing they have to learn or change. The story gets interesting when the two pull in different directions.
The want drives the plot: it is what the character does. The need drives the arc: it is who they become. Often the character only gets what they need by giving up, or changing, what they want.
When you are stuck on a character, ask two questions: what do they think will fix their life, and what would actually fix it?
Want: Sam wants to win the cooking contest. Need: Sam needs to stop shutting out the sister who taught her to cook.
